Internet - Jungle essays When I think of the Internet, I think of something that started out as absolutely nothing other than an idea. I think of something that meant nothing to advertisers or students doing research papers. When I think of the Internet I think of something that evolved into one of the worlds most powerful resources for communicating, and as we speak is becoming even greater. The expansion of the Internet is unprecedented. Television reached 50 million people in 13 years; the Internet took only four. And there are no signs that its growth is stopping. The Internet is going to keep becoming more powerful whether it is in the worlds best interests and whether the world is ready or not. The Internet was developed as a source of continuously updated information that would provide information to users about almost any topic that they needed. So why is it that users, especially teenagers and young adults use the Internet for other purposes that are against many cultures and traditions all over the world? The reason is probably the fact that the teenagers' parents do not talk with them. The teenagers are not told about what the Internet contains and so when they 'explore' on their own and come across uncensored pictures, etc. they think that they can use the Internet for such purposes. Their parents do not make them aware of their family values and so the children think that they can do anything they want. They should be told about what is accepted in their family and what is not. There are a myriad of potential detrimental effects of Internet globalization. For one there is the further marginalization of the global poor and disenfranchised, (particularly the functionally and computer illiterate). Also, the "unknown factor," the unintentional unleashing of destructive forces or creation of negative effects that we have no way of foreseeing.
